Taps the mic… is this thing on? Oh hi! So it’s me again Spoiled for Concerned Bloggers and this month we are talking about Blood Donation.
Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments. The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes and the entire process from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min.
To be eligible to donate you mus be:
- At least 17 years old- the minimum age varies by state with some states allowing 16 year old to donate with parent permission.
- At least 110 pounds
- Able to pass the physical and health history assessments
- In good health
With blood donation, there are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of blood. One pint of blood saves 3 lives. In the U.S. every two seconds someone needs blood and more than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day. One pint of blood saves three lives. So take the initiative and do your part by helping save a life and donate!
