Back again with a Concerned Blogger PSA! This time around we are talking about endangered species. My endangered specie I’ve decided to highlight the oh so cute giant panda. Despite there cuteness the giant panda is one of the rarest of the bear family and among the world’s threatened animals. Located in Southwest China, it’s population is less than 1600 in the wild. The giant panda’s forest habitat is increasingly fragmented by roads and railroads, while poaching also remains an ever-present threat.
Giant Panda’s are one of the most talked about endangered species by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund). They are ranked as a EN on the Red List. This Red List is a widely recognized global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. Below is a break down of the Red List and what the giant panda’s EN rating really means.
Extinction Risk: A species conservation status, as classified by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
EX-Extinct (No reasonable doubt the last individual as died
EW- Extinct in the Wild (Known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity, or as a naturalized population.
CR- Critically Endangred (Facing a extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.)
EN -Endangered- (Facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.)
VU- Vulnerable- (Facing a high risk if extinction int the wild.)
NT- Near Threatened- (Likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.)
LC- Least Concerned- (Does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened.)
Despite it’s endangered species rating, great lengths have been taken in an effort to conserve the giant panda. The Chinese government has established over 50 panda reserves, protecting more than 2.5 million acres- over 45 percent of remaining giant panda habitat-protecting more than 60 percent of the population. Like the Chinese government you too can help save these wonderful animals by adopting a panda or making a donation to a giant panda saving fund.
